Editors' Note

___We are pleased to invite you to explore our experiences of the 15th of April 2005 - a typical day in Science. These reports provide a snapshot of research occurring in various fields of Science. Science is everywhere, and scientific research is conducted by people in many different jobs. Scientists work for universities, research institutes, and hospitals, as doctors, vets, and high school teachers.

___The experiences of our reporters on the Day in Science provide insight into the interdisciplinary nature of Science. In high school, you may not learn Biology and Mathematics in the same subject! But the work of many scientists involves the overlap between disciplines. By reading the articles on this website, we trust that you will realise that all areas of Science are integrally linked.

___This project represents the passion that we, as students, feel for our chosen area of study. It also captures the energy with which scientists approach their work. We hope that you are inspired by the potential of a career in Science, and we look forward to meeting you one Day in Science!

The Executive Team

Planner: Jacky Ho
Advanced Science - Biochemistry

___"As a planner, I had a unique and compelling experience overseeing and guiding the project. It is definitely amazing to be taking part - initiating the work and guiding it to an interesting end product. Undoubtedly, it offered me opportunities to understand how effective communication facilitates any project (and maintaining good communication proved to be a major stress in the project), or to a larger extent – communication plays a key role in the greater society, as well."

Planner: Tammy Poon
Advanced Science – Psychology

___“As a planner, I had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the other roles and to oversee the process of organising, reporting, and collaborating on the task at hand. Although the task did also bear a significant workload and some awkward moments, the cohesiveness of the students within the class made the project run close to the original plan. It has definitely been a character-building experience for all involved, and the final product sheds just a little light on the metaphorical tears and sweat that have gone into LIFE.”

Planner: Adi Smith
Advanced Science – Psychology / Arts Linguistics

___As a fourth year Science /Arts student, I think that I have a unique perspective on the role of the scientist in the grand scheme of things. As one of the planners for this project, I felt a heavy responsibility in making the final product an informative and interesting piece of work. However, I learned throughout the session that Science (and the investigation of Science) is a collaborative process: the responsibilities and results are shared among all those who participate. I now take pride in the creation that has been produced knowing that I have been but a small part of its success.”

Editor: Emily Bek
Advanced Science – Biotechnology

___When baby Emily was discovered in the wreckage of a space pod that had fallen to Earth, she was not crying. Reading the pod’s escape manual, not only had Emily discovered that the instructions corresponded to a somewhat strange pair of underpants and not to her craft, she had detected four spelling errors and three grammatical faux pas. It is with this eye for detail that Emily scrutinized this written record of a Day in Science. She hopes that you find it both better spelt and more relevant than her first editing project.

Editor: Christina Owen
Advanced Science – Ecology

___Chris is a mature-aged student, currently foregoing employment in the paid workforce in order to slog it out on the poverty line in pursuit of an education. This decision was precipitated by the fact, that despite years of employment as a cook, she poses a significant safety risk when armed with plates of hot food or sharp kitchen utensils. Hopefully, her Ecology major will ensure the safety of innocent diners.

Editor: Michael Gao
Advanced Science – Biotechnology

___DIS gave me a chance to develop my communication skills, as well as a chance to tell the reporters how to do their job by being partly responsible for writing the guidelines for the articles they were to produce.

Post Production Staff: Roger Mallak
Advanced Science Pharmacology

___Science is random. Science is reason. Science is diverse and flexible. Science is the 'pop' sound from a test tube as hydrogen is ignited. Science is fun. I like being in control. So being in control of the manufacture of something as important as medicine is definitely what I want to make a career out of. As I grew up, the joke associated with Pharmacy was always the production of narcotics, but you should know that drugs were created to benefit human kind, not to catalyse the destruction of it."

Post Production Staff: Sinney Xiao Yun Shen
Advanced Science – Psychology

___Science has always been fascinating to me, both factual and fictional wise. I love the uncertain nature it brings to our future. Participating in this project it has taught me exactly how to work with unpredictable situations. It's been a wonderful experience, and I hope that you (the viewer) will like the site.”

Post Production Staff: Mandy Zandra Seet
Advanced Science – Pure Mathematics

___Since the age of fourteen, I've dreamt of being a renowned Mathematician. Who knows, one day I will be one of the mathematicians interviewed for the very same 'Day in Science' project! It was my mum who inspired me with her love for maths. Not surprisingly, I'm not the only child of four in my family to love and excel in Maths. I hope that, in the future, all four of us will end up in the Maths profession. Then, we'll do our parents proud by being the first family in Singapore to have four mathematicians in the family!”

Communications Officer: Christopher Hellyer
Advanced Science – Ecology/Marine Biology

___“I have looked forward to seeing the edited materials from the reporters and communicating with the editors and later post production staff to monitor how it is all shaping up. It will be great to see the final product! The development of the web page is a great way to see this production process, as well as monitoring discussion on Ezboard.”

Communications Officer: Michael Huang
Advanced Science Biochemisty

___I have been very interested in my responsibilities on this project because I have been able to learn how to communicate with others more effectively."
