Executive Team

Communications Officer: Johanna Elms"Science and its applications are so wide and varied that one can only be excited as to the possibilities involved with science as a career!"
Advanced Science - Pharmacology

Planner: Siobhan Kelly"Wow I can’t believe it’s all over, it certainly was a challenge but I am happy to say that all the hard work paid off with the website reflecting the entire classes’ immense effort. This project has been an interesting journey which despite its many frustrations has proved to be very rewarding. I learnt a great deal from my involvement that extended way beyond the science itself, with my role as project planner allowing me to attain real life skills. I have enjoyed this experience and would like to thank my fellow executive members and the entire class for making it such a positive experience."
Advanced Science - Psychology

Planner: Julian Stevenson"I am happy to repeat that this CD-ROM has been created by students, for students, without outside interference. While it might not be perfect, the final product is something to be proud of, especially considering that we are effectively student volunteers. I thank Stephen and James particularly for supporting me throughout. Running this project has been an enriching experience, allowing me to hone my skills in planning, management, administration, editing, and diplomacy. I now fully appreciate the usefulness of efficient systems and effective communication for organising large projects. Beyond science, my passions include nature and the humanities, especially music."
Advanced Science - Molecular Biology

Team Managers

Zoology: Jason Chan“As the team manager of the zoology team, I was definitely challenged and I believe I developed stronger strategies of organisation, project management and most importantly communication. Furthermore as a psychology undergraduate, it definitely widened my perspective to the world of science. It was a fun and rewarding experience, collaborating with my team in such a major and purposeful task.”
Advanced Science - Neuroscience

Biological Sciences: Nur Hazlin Hazrin Chong"As an international student, my being in an advanced science course has been exciting, yet challenging. A part of this course, the Day in the Life of Science, has taught me key things on team management. I have also improved my communication skills, which was what I personally aimed for in this project. Helping to build this website with a team of dedicated, cooperative and enthusiastic individuals, was a truly rewarding experience. I hope that my future in Science will be as wonderful as this."
Advanced Science - Biotechnology

Science Education: Amy Datyner"As a team manager, I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of both sides of the production process. Not only was I able to hear about the varied experiences of my team mates on their Day in Science, but I was also able to see how one goes about making a website. As we can see from our website, communication is a vital component within scientific investigation. Our LIFE2001 class has also observed that communication is an important medium for teamwork. Without communication, science would not be what it is today."
Advanced Science/Arts - Psychology/English

Technical Crew: Sean Humphrey"LIFE2001 taught me the importance of time management and organization, and gave me insight into just what it is to be "stressed". Being a leader to my peers was rewarding and enjoyable, yet for the most part incredibly frustrating! I will never take on the responsibility of creating a webpage again!"
Advanced Science - Pharmacology

Physical Sciences: Anthony Mew“Despite doing a double degree, I seem to have a lot of spare time - which means more time to... waste it. I have always had a fascination with Psychology and really enjoy the major, however I’m hoping to get into Human Resources, which was one of the reasons I wanted to be a team manager for this project. The project was a very enriching experience and I’ve learnt plenty with regards to organising, communicating and achieving deadlines. I've really enjoyed all aspects of this project... Would I do it again you ask? …No.”
Advanced Science/Social Science - Psychology/Human Resource Management

Medical Sciences: Emily Stoddart“Having the opportunity to manager my peers in The Day in the Life of Science opened my eyes to the highs and lows associated with successfully completing a large scale project. Making my team mates continually meet my deadlines, not once, but throughout the thirteen weeks of the project, was definitely my greatest challenge. This project undeniably helped fuel my desire to pursue a career that involves both science and management.”
Advanced Science - Pharmacology

Psychology: Natalie Tesoriero“On the whole I found this project very challenging, yet rewarding. My role as team manager was nothing like I expected. I found that I learnt a lot about myself through this process. I improved my skills in communication and management, which I will be able to put to use in my future career as a scientist.”
Advanced Science - Psychology

Physical Sciences: Joshua Jordan CapelNo reflective comment provided.
Advanced Science - Mathematics and Finance

Science Education: Sonia Chau“This Day in Science project has broadened my appreciation for the field of science. I find that now I am much more interested in areas such as science education, medical science and biochemistry, even though my main interests still lie in psychology. I have also learned the importance of scientists having good communication skills so that ideas can be shared and problems can be solved as effectively as possible.”
Advanced Science - Psychology

Zoology: Melissa Gardiner"The old Chinese proverb, 'It is not the destination that is important, but the journey there' is reflective of my experience during the 'World-Wide Day in Science' project. As producer, my primary concern was the organisation of the reports to be displayed within the site, and through this task I learnt not only a great deal about organisational and communication skills, but also about science itself!! The articles composed by the 'Zoology' reporters were outstanding and gave a really fascinating insight into the diversity of careers available in zoology and marine science. Now when I grow up, I want to be a zoologist!!!"
Advanced Science - Genetics

Psychology: Amy Huynh“Being part of a team to produce a CD-ROM about science was both a rewarding and challenging experience. I think the project has prepared me for the challenges that lie in the “real world”, in particular the workforce, on things such as effective communication, problem solving, team work, and stress management. Thus, it will be extremely rewarding to know that this production will help you in your quest to become the next Albert Einstein.”
Advanced Science/Arts - Psychology/Sociology

Medical Sciences: Sindy Sin Yee Kwok“In the making of the webpage, a number of unpredicted events occurred. As a producer, it was crucial for me to ensure all was well-prepared for the team and that the post-production was well organized. Effective communication has played an important role in this project and it was amazing that through our collaboration, we, as a team, have created a masterpiece.”
Advanced Science - Neuroscience

Psychology: Felicity Leslie“From the get-go it was obvious that this project would require a lot of cooperation and trust in the other members of your team. It also allows you to see the side of scientists you don't typically get to see. So if you play your part, this project can, and will be very rewarding.”
Advanced Science - Psychology

Biological Sciences: Kwan Yi Queenie Leung"The Day in Science changed my perspective on how to communicate more effectively to others, whether to my peers or to a wide range of audience. After looking at the final product (website), I realised I played a minute role in the success of this wonderful piece of work."
Advanced Science - Medical Microbiology and Immunology

Science Education: Evlyn Rabbat”This project was a huge eye opener as it demonstrated the incredible amount of work and organisation that goes into creating a website that will be open to the public. Being a producer allowed me to overview the project in full and gain insight into the daily lives of the scientists, from the perspective of the reporters. In doing this it allowed me to realise the diversity of jobs in the field of science and in doing so, eliminate the stereotype of scientists in a lab coat.”
Advanced Science - Biotechnology

Physical Sciences: Paul Shieh"Proper planning and preparation prevents poor performance, but planning and preparation only gets you so far. The rest you make up on the spot, but that's just life and science."
Advanced Science - Biochemistry

Reporters

Medical Sciences: Sarah Bernard“As a reporter for the medical team, I had the opportunity to visit professionals from the field that I want to get in to. Through the project, I got a chance to observe what I could be doing for a living one day. Another thing I realised is that in the pharmaceutical industry, it is not only science that plays a major role, but also business, even in the labs by the managers.”
Advanced Science - Pharmacology

Zoology: Daniela Binder“As a reporter, I think I had the best job in the project. It was great just gaining experience in contacting scientists, as well as going out and seeing for yourself what was actually involved. The project made up my mind that zoology is definitely the field I want to work in!”
Advanced Science - Zoology

Biological Sciences: Wai-Fong Chan“Life is full of unpredictable events, and for a scientist, it is the unpredictable events that often lead to great discoveries. Driven by the thrill and excitement, Scientists are therefore able to discover something new, whilst overcoming the challenges that arise. I believe by being a scientist, we must be prepared to expect the unexpected.”
Advanced Science - Medical Microbiology and Immunology

Science Education: Nicholas Coughtrey“I am very proud to be involved in such a project because of the messages it attempts to convey to our younger generation; Science is an extremely diverse field with numerous jobs in numerous settings, and scientists also have social lives outside of their work, they are not enslaved by science. I hope that a few outdated but still recognised stereotypes have been erased.”
Advanced Science - Physiology

Psychology: Giovana Claire Faraguna"The parallels between this project as a large collaboration and the nature of the workplace of my scientist made me appreciate what this course teaches us in working as members of a team to produce a bigger picture."
Advanced Science - Psychology

Biological Sciences: Daniella Fish"CSI, Law & Order, FORENSICS, FORENSICS, FORENSICS. How could I resist my love for it?! After spending the day with my scientist, I came to realise that Forensic Science is not as straight forward as presented on CSI. Although challenging, nothing compares to the personal satisfaction one reaps when cracking a case."
Advanced Science - Psychology

Science Education: Loren Hallgath"Science is responsible for much development and insight into this universe. Although it doesn’t have all the answers, it’s certainly a good place to start. Studying science and witnessing scientists has given me a greater appreciation for the physical world, the one who created it, and those who study it."
Advanced Science - Pharmacology

Zoology: Rowena Hamer“The "World-Wide Day in Science Australia 2006" experience was, for me, a chance to see science at work outside the realm of academia. Through my own experience of following Dr White for the day and talking to other reporters, I have been encouraged to 'think outside the square' in considering where my degree can take me. It was also a chance to confirm in my own mind that this is indeed what I want to do with my life.”
Advanced Science - Zoology

Zoology: Genevra Hart“The 'World-Wide Day in Science' project was not what I had expected it to be. It's amazing how many different sides to science you can find just in the one 'category'. Although the project was stressful at times, it has helped me to better communicate not only what I think about various people and areas of science, but also what I want out of a career in science.”
Advanced Science - Psychology

Psychology: Amanda Jellie"This project has shown me that it's incredible what can be achieved when everybody works together. It's true that there were moments when the team leaders got frustrated with team members, and when it looked like nothing would get done, but thanks to the perseverance of the planners and team leaders, all the reports were written (and interesting!) in the end. The most impressive part was the work of the post production crew, who turned a collection of articles and photos into an incredible looking, interactive website. I was proud that my report was part of it. Hopefully everybody agrees that the end product was worth the effort."
Advanced Science - Neuroscience

Psychology: John Paul Malkoun“The World-Wide Day in Science project was the kind of experience where you can only appreciate it at the end, being able to physically see the visions of so many people come to the screen, knowing that all the hours of work being put into the project were finally coming to a glorious end, where the result was something you had no idea it could be attained. And yet, you come to appreciate the importance of cooperation and teamwork in order to be able to reach your goal!”
Advanced Science - Psychology

Psychology: Sriram Muralitharan"By being a part of the making of this website, I learnt how much organisation and sacrifice is needed to successfully coordinate in a team."
Advanced Science - Psychology

Physical Sciences: Joanna Offord"I've enjoyed science since I was young and was impressed with how hard science educators work to share the rewards of science with the public. Research is so important to health and society, so sharing the knowledge to improve everyone's quality of life can make a real difference. When I'm not at uni, I like shopping and relaxing with friends!"
Advanced Science - Neuroscience

Medical Sciences: Mina Popovic“Undertaking the role of a reporter on the ‘World-Wide Day in Science’, gave me insight into the socio-cultural nature of science and work of researchers, giving me a chance to further my skills in an effort to contribute to the endorsement of science not only in Australia, but worldwide. My work and the work of others made me aware of the broad and diverse nature of science, and the potential and plethora of jobs that it provides. The experience was definitely invaluable, and the final product made it all the more rewarding!“
Advanced Science - Medical Microbiology and Immunology

Science Education: May Rowe-Spencer"I remember once near the end of a Science class at school, drunk with power after a successful pop-test, contemplating the bunsen burner we'd been using and the wooden cupboard with posters, notices and other pieces of paper that was right next to it and thinking "wouldn't it be cool..." Fortunately, I had enough sense (or, in tech-speak, "frontal lobe activity") not to finish that mental sentence. My role as a reporter for this project gave me the chance to see what 'real' scientists get up to. It was great. There may not be quite that level of freedom, but after my Day in Science, merely burning down a Science lab would just seem dull."
Advanced Science/Arts - Neuroscience

Medical Sciences: Martin Tanudjaja“Being a reporter for the Medical Science team was certainly an interesting component of this entire project. I was able to meet with various interesting scientists from disciplines completely different to my own. This allowed me insight into the various opportunities out there in the world, waiting for me to grab hold of and make my own. The project itself was certainly challenging, in terms of meeting deadlines, drafting and redrafting articles, maintaining communication, and worst of all, trying to juggle all this with other uni work. However, that being said, the project certainly did not lack any benefits. I was able to taste what the real workforce would be like - working as part of a team and doing the best you can so as not to let your team-mates down. Each role (no matter how small or big) had an important purpose in bringing the project together. The most important lesson I learnt was: If we all pitch in, we can achieve so much more.”
Advanced Science - Medical Microbiology and Immunology

Biological Sciences: Ian Tran“When you think about Science, or maybe it's just me, I had always envisaged some sort of mad scientist hermit in a laboratory, with electrodes on people's heads waiting for lightning to strike. Little did I know that this wasn't far from reality. However, instead of mad, you replace it with respected, hermit with a "qualified team of experts" and lightning with well... your power outlet. Of course people are still sticking electrodes everywhere, but it's just so fun.”
Advanced Science - Mathematics and Finance

Physical Sciences: Daniel Truant“This project has expanded the horizons of what we, as science learners, can imagine ourselves doing, allowing us to take a look into the future toward what we may endeavour to become.”
Advanced Science - Theoretical Physics

Physical Sciences: Djordje Veselinovic"When I enrolled in LIFE2001, I didn't know what to expect. The course description was so eloquent, leaving every possibility open. It turned out that my expectations of a scientific crash course in washing your undergarments while learning to operate a particle accelerator were slightly misguided. I might not have learnt a more scientific way of washing undergarments, but I did learn some very practical skills involving planning, preparation and conflict resolution."
Advanced Science - Psychology

Editors

Biological Sciences and Science Education: James R. Krycer"Imagine being able to use cutting-edge technology to satisfy your curiosity about any natural phenomenon. That is what Science is all about – exploring the whats, whys, and hows of our world. As an editor, I had the pleasure of learning in depth about a variety of science professionals - everything from their motivations to what they do both in and out of their workplace. I learnt that Science can take a variety of forms, from lab research to teaching high school students, but always being employed to make the world a better place."
Advanced Science - Molecular Biology

Physical Sciences and Zoology: Sze-En Lau"Being an editor for the 'World-Wide Day in Science' project has turned me into the most critical skeptic yet. However, my editing experiences showed me that there is potential in every body of work that can be used to build upon itself for betterment."
Advanced Science - Zoology

Medical Sciences and Psychology: Caitlin Murray"While the 'World-Wide Day in Science' project was stressful and often frustrating, I learnt about the highly interesting and diverse nature of science. This really consolidated my choice of science as a career path. Science rocks my socks!"
Advanced Science - Psychology

Technical Crew

Production Staff: Julian Butt“After this project I think I’ll look upon all those involved with the organization and implementation of large-scale events, projects, gatherings etc. with a newfound respect. The process by which a large group of people can be motivated and organized to create a polished product is truly amazing. Working on this project has forged unique relationships with team members and helped us all develop skills for working in a team-based environment that truly parallels science in the modern day workplace.”
Advanced Science - Medical Microbiology and Immunology

Production Staff: Patrick Phan"Working on the adayinscience.net project has shown me that scientists are unique. There is no single definition for a successful scientist. Scientists must be able to show their resourcefulness and ability to adapt to the many roles that they can, and will, play in the future. Therefore, science is great."
Advanced Science - Neuroscience

Production Staff: Stephen Zammit“If you want to learn all about science and how to work in teams then I highly recommend that you travel back in time and stop me from taking this role. However, if you just want to learn about the science part then I highly recommend reading all that this site has to offer, as being made to continuously read the articles taught me a thing or two. And finally, if you want some advice then I highly recommend you make sure that you are getting paid before taking up a large-scale project.”
