Science for Creative MindsBy Mandy Lau

Nano-what?

From pregnancy testing, to new developments in DNA testing, to biological warfare, nanotechnology exposes you to an enormous variety of brilliant careers. But what is it? Nanotechnology is any field of science that deals with nanometres. That is, matter measuring as small as 1/100000 of a millimetre. It is also a field of science that brings together biologists, chemists and physicists.

Kristopher Kilian is a Chemistry PhD student who is currently doing research on "chemical modification of porous silicon photonic crystals for biology and medicine" at the University of New South Wales. One of Kilian's research aims is to develop a label-free biosensor.
