A Cure for a Cure’s Side Effects By Yishan Huang

Playing with DNA

Mutating DNA is the livelihood of Dr. Angela Finch. As a result of mutation, the cells function in different ways. It is the aim of her team to use this technique to determine what part of the DNA causes the side effects of various drugs, and eventually figure out how to turn off these genes or block these genes from being expressed.

Dr. Angela Finch is a pharmacology lecturer at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). She obtained her Honours and PhD degrees at the University of Queensland, followed by post-doctoral work in Scotland, and later at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. Dr Finch now runs and owns her own laboratory, but soon hopes to become a senior lecturer, or to go back to Queensland to work.
