Mike attended Princeton University, studying a joint major inbiologyandgeology. In 1967, he came to Australia as a Fullbright Scholar (a prestigous scholarship) at the Western Australian Museum. He liked it so well that he decided to stay. He completed his PhD inZoologyat the University of Western Australia in 1976.

Mike became the Curator ofMammalsat the Queensland Museum in 1972. He moved to Sydney in 1978 to lecture at UNSW after which he left the university briefly to become Director of the Australian Museum (1999-2004). He returned to UNSW as the Dean of Science.
