School at the Zoo By Ellen Couchman

Where did it all begin?

Rod completed a Bachelor of Science with a double major in animals. He started university with no specific job in mind... his marks could have been better.

He came to university directly from high school. Half way through his degree, he got married and decided to defer his studies for four years. He and his wife went overseas for 18 months. When they returned, Rod resumed his degree, this time specialising in animals. Thankfully, his marks improved significantly - because he enjoyed it. Often at dinner parties, Rod would animatedly show off his latest collections of rocks or insects, to the dismay of his wife.

Finishing his Bachelor degree wasn’t the end of his education. He obtained a Diploma of Education at the University of Technology, Sydney with a focus in science. His friends recommended he complete a Dip Ed. because of his teaching abilities and passion for nature.

Koala's feed on the leaves of Gum Trees which are nutrient poor so they have developed a lifestyle where they sleep for most of the day.
