Maria's research has pitted her against hundreds of other scientists around the world. Competition in the search for glycine can get quite stiff at times. Her most memorable achievement was when she managed to find evidence that disproved a claim by another scientist - who claimed that he had found glycine in space. “I sure hope he is not still angry with me now,” she says with a smile.
